A perfume’s top, heart, and base notes describe the three stages of its scent after application. These stages develop over time as fragrance ingredients evaporate at different rates.

Top notes are the opening scents you notice during roughly the first 5 to 15 minutes after spraying. They come mainly from highly volatile ingredients that evaporate readily, much like alcohol. Lemon, bergamot, lavender, and thyme are common examples. These notes tend to be sharp, intense, and quick to fade.

Heart notes emerge as the opening fades, generally around 20 minutes to two hours after application. At this stage, the ingredients in the blend unfold together in harmony, revealing what might be called the perfume’s true character.

The heart reflects the perfumer’s craft and creative effort. It is where a fragrance’s value lies and the part that most fully expresses its emotional character and the image it conveys.

Base notes follow the heart, becoming apparent from around two hours after application. They come primarily from longer-lasting ingredients, such as woods, animalic materials, oakmoss, and vanilla. As these notes mingle with your natural body scent, they create an individual impression that gradually fades.
