Skincare for Dry, Oily, and Combination Skin: What’s Different?

Different skin types have different needs, so a good skincare routine starts with understanding your own skin. Recognizing whether your skin is dry, oily, or a combination of the two can help you choose a routine that suits it.

Dry skin often looks and feels rough, lacks elasticity, and has small, barely visible pores. The complexion may appear dull, and facial skin can be thin, with patches of redness and a tendency toward sensitivity. Sagging, fine lines, and wrinkles may also be more noticeable.

If you have dry skin, cleanse twice a day with a gentle face wash or a creamy cleanser. Avoid long baths or showers and excessively hot water, which can make dryness worse.

Applying moisturizer after cleansing helps soothe the skin and soften the appearance of fine lines. Gently pat your face dry, then apply moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp to help retain moisture. Very dry skin may need moisturizer several times throughout the day.

Look for moisturizers containing ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which help the skin hold on to water. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and spending long periods in air-conditioned rooms. Drink fluids regularly and include appropriate amounts of dietary fats in your meals.

Oily skin produces abundant oil, with noticeable shine across the T-zone, enlarged pores, and a tendency to develop blackheads and other clogged pores. This is caused by excess sebum, the natural substance that helps keep skin lubricated and retain moisture. Oily skin also tends to be less prone to wrinkles and visible aging and less sensitive to external irritants.

People with oily skin often wash their faces more frequently to remove excess oil and dirt. However, limiting cleansing to no more than twice a day is important, as overwashing can cause the skin to produce more oil. A foaming cleanser is an option to try.

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and helps the complexion look brighter. Over time, it can also encourage collagen production. People with oily skin can exfoliate somewhat more frequently, potentially up to once a day with a gentle product.

For daily moisturizing, choose a lightweight formula intended for oily skin. Products with a low oil content that absorb easily and help control shine are generally a better fit. Look for the term “non-comedogenic” on the packaging, which indicates that the formula is designed not to clog pores.

Alongside moisturizer, daily sunscreen use throughout the year can help prevent excess sebum production triggered by sun exposure. Limit spicy or otherwise irritating foods, fried foods, and high-fat foods in your everyday diet.

Combination skin has both dry and oily areas. The forehead, nose, and chin—collectively known as the T-zone—may look shiny, while the cheeks feel dry and tight. These contrasting needs can make choosing skincare products confusing.

A gentle cleanser paired with a moisturizing cream or lotion free of oil-based moisturizing ingredients can be a good combination. Different areas of the face may need different care: dry patches may benefit from extra moisture, while oily areas may need only a lightweight moisturizer. Pay attention to how each area responds and adjust your routine to suit your skin.
